Adam MARCZYŃSKI (1908-1985)
Painter, graphic artist, draughtsman, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, with which he was associated as a teacher from 1945 to 1979. Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (1929?1936) under Władysław Jarocki and Stanisław Pieńkowski. Before the war, a member of the Cracow Group, and co-founder of its postwar reactivation in 1957. One of the leading representatives of the Krakow avant-garde. His work moved from the influence of Cubism and Colorism, through lyrical compositions inspired by Paul Klee and Joan Miró, to the matter painting and three-dimensional assemblages of the 1960s and 1970s, in which he used, among other things, plywood, tar paper and metal. He represented Poland at international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1956), Sao Paulo and Documenta in Kassel (1959). A posthumous retrospective exhibition was organized in 1985 at the BWA in Cracow.
