GERMAN SCHOOL (EARLY 20TH CENTURY), MUNICH SECESSION CIRCLE, Portrait of a Distinguished Lady in an Alpine Landscape

A monumental and atmospheric composition, this work captures a distinguished female figure in a winter landscape of striking contrasts. The subject is depicted in a tailored black coat and a wide-brimmed hat adorned with feathers, her steady, enigmatic gaze directed toward the viewer. The piece is a masterclass in early 20th-century German Modernism, closely aligned with the aesthetic principles of the Munich Secession and the "Die Scholle" group.
The artist employs a bold palette where the deep blacks of the lady’s attire serve as a powerful anchor against the vibrant, crystalline blues and whites of the snow-covered mountains. The sophisticated use of heavy impasto on the snow-laden trees adds a tactile, sculptural quality to the scene, bridging the stylistic gap between late Impressionism and the structured, graphic forms of the Secessionist movement.
The choice of plywood as a support reflects the avant-garde practices in Munich and Vienna during this period, providing a rigid surface ideal for the "Plakatstil" (poster-style) aesthetic that defined the era’s progressive art. The painting evokes the elite atmosphere of alpine retreats like Garmisch or St. Moritz during the Belle Époque, representing not just a portrait, but a sophisticated window into the high society and refined elegance of pre-war Europe. Oil on plywood, 100 x 70 cm.
