Описание лота
Оценка: 3 000 - 5 000 EUR

Gabriel von Max, the son of the prominent Prague sculptor Josef Max, stands as a central figure of the Munich School, yet his artistic soul remained deeply rooted in Bohemia. Having begun his formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Eduard von Engerth, Max infused German Academicism with a distinct Slavic mysticism and psychological depth. This work is a quintessential example of his Seelenmalerei (Soul-painting), a style where the portrait transcends mere likeness to become an ethereal study of the human subconscious. The subject, rendered with the artist’s characteristic translucent and pale skin tones, gazes out with a haunting, melancholic intensity. The vibrant blue headscarf not only provides a masterful coloristic contrast but also echoes the "Neapolitan" style popular in 19th-century European salons. Max’s technical brilliance is evident in the soft, feathered brushwork and the liquid rendering of the eyes, which draw the viewer into a silent, spiritual dialogue. Throughout his illustrious career, Gabriel von Max maintained a profound connection to his birthplace. His formative years in Prague provided the groundwork for his fascination with the mystical and the scientific—themes that would later define his international success. Today, his works are highly coveted in major Czech, German, and Austrian institutions, representing a bridge between Central European Romanticism and the Symbolist movement. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by PhDr. Šárka Leubnerová, a leading specialist in 19th-century European and Czech art. Signed upper left: "G. Max". Oil on canvas 35 x 28 cm
