The painting presents a genre scene set in a late Gothic interior that is described with great detail. A mother tenderly tends to her child's needs, while a maid stands nearby, ready with a cloth to swaddle the infant in a fresh diaper. A young boy sits on the floor and plays with a palm broom. Positioned on the floor there is a plunge between the two women with a water jug. Behind the maid a cradle is visible. The room's architectural features, characterized by strong perspective, include a substantial four-poster bed situated to the right and a niche housing a water jug on the left wall.
