Well-centered, high-relief strike. Only minimal marks on the rim and edge (frame repaired?). With golden patina. Superb to Fleur de coin.
Caius Cassius Longinus, born around 87 BC, was quaestor to Proconsul Crassus, then tribune of the plebs in 49 and one of Pompey's lieutenants during Caesar's civil war. Benefiting from Caesar's clemency after the battle of Pharsalus in 48, he was appointed praetor in 44. Along with Brutus, he was one of the ringleaders who assassinated Caesar. He then fled to Syria, while Brutus was in Macedonia. He joined forces with Brutus to fight the second triumvirate, but was defeated at the first battle of Philippi in October 42, and, believing Brutus to be lost, asked his freedman to run him through with his sword.
