Jan SOBCZYÑSKI
1918 New York - 2007 Warsaw
Born in New York as the son of Polish immigrants. After the premature death of his mother, while still a child, he returned to Poland under the care of his aunt. He lived in Lviv until the outbreak of World War II. After being arrested, he was deported to Siberia, where he joined the Second Polish Army. He was awarded the Cross of Valor and the Order of Polonia Restituta for fighting on the fronts of World War II. After the war, he settled in Warsaw, where he studied at the Academy under professors Bolesław Kuźmiński, Michał Bylina and Ludwik Maciąg. He painted cityscapes (usually of small towns in Silesia and Pomerania) and battle scenes; his triptych Battle of the Bzura River was awarded during an exhibition at Zachęta in 1985 and is now in the collection of the Ministry of National Defense.
