Vytautas Remeika (1930-1972) was a Lithuanian-born artist who developed a distinctive artistic path in exile. He was born in Radviliškis, but after the Second World War he moved to Germany, where he studied at the École des Arts et Métiers in Freiburg from 1945-1950. From 1952 he lived in Canada, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, and took an active part in the artistic life of the Lithuanian diaspora. He died in Montreal in 1972.
Vytautas Remeika's work is distinguished by a modern, Western language of painting, combining realistic landscape and figurative motifs with stylized, abstracted forms. His work combines expressiveness, decorative elements and the play of light. The most frequent motifs are the sea, ships, fragments of the city and human figures, rendered in dynamic compositions and clear colour contrasts.
Remeika is considered a significant artist of the Lithuanian diaspora, whose work reflects Lithuanian identity in the context of modern Western art and enriches the artistic heritage of the Lithuanian diaspora.
