Česlovas Janušas (1907-1993) was a Lithuanian painter and graphic artist who began his career between the wars and later became active in the diaspora. Born in Lithuania, he studied at the Kaunas School of Art, and at the end of the Second World War he moved to Germany and later to the USA, where he became one of the participants in the cultural life of the Lithuanian diaspora. His work is dominated by expressive, decorative painting, often depicting Lithuanian landscapes, sea motifs, architecture and the human figure. Janušas sought to preserve the Lithuanian identity in the form of visual art, which is why his works are full of nostalgia, light and stylized form. The artist's significance lies in his contribution to the continuity of the Lithuanian artistic tradition in the diaspora - not only did he nurture the national artistic heritage, but he also helped to shape Lithuania's cultural image abroad.
