[INVENTORY of the book collection]. Manuscript "Master Inventory of my books" compiled by Jan Marciniak of Poznań from the 1930s to the 1950s.
Leather-bound book form. 23x19 cm, stained trim. The library, the title contents of which the book contains, was owned by Jan Marciniak of Poznań, as evidenced by his ownership stamps and attached fragments of correspondence addressed to him. The first 145 foiled handwritten cards list 1,077 titles (books, a few magazines and publishing series) entered in the inventory until 1945, while the next 13 separately foiled cards list a further 172 items included in the book collection after the war (published until 1957). At the end, on 4 cards, there was an "Inventory of maps and cartographic works in my possession," including the titles of 31 objects. The book was half written, the remaining pages blank. The descriptions, placed in hand-drawn tables, include: author and title of the work, number of volumes, name of the publisher, place of publication, year, format, type of binding, price, comments. The book collection consisted of works in Polish and German, with occasional Russian and French, of a literary, historical, farm (gardening), natural history, customs, to a lesser extent religious and linguistic (dictionaries) nature. The library consisted of current publications (interwar and postwar periods) and antiquarian items (including old prints). In the "Notes" section there are interesting notes, such as: "Souvenir of the completed Bolshevik War, bought for myself in Poznań on the first day after returning from the field" (item 1, Volumina Legum), "Souvenir of the presidency of the Zan Circle in Poznań. With the permission of the board of directors, exchanged for 15 volumes of other works) (item 2, S. Staszic - Cautions for Poland, 1790), "Gift of Fritz Klopp in memory of frontline camaraderie (item 110, F. Burger - Die Schackgalerie München), "Bought antiquarian at K. Gieryn in Bydgoszcz, on October 1, 1932" (item 222, Z. Krasinski - Writings, 1904), "Sold in poverty" (item. 273, Poland, its history and culture), "With author's autograph and artist's autograph" (item 474, W. Reymont - Legenda, with woodcuts by W. Skoczylas), "This work has been totally confiscated in Poland" (item 549, B. Chelminski - Masonerya w Polsce współczesnej, 1936), "The first book bound by Marys' own hands" (item 931, G. Maupassant - Our Heart), "Himself for a Name Day" (item 1709, J. Kasprowicz - Hymns, 1956). On p. 136, after item 1028, a touching and emotional note in red ink: "This is how far I have managed to catalog my books. I had already written down the last pages during the war at the end of 1939 and the beginning of 1940. I did not manage to write down approximately - by eye taking - some 500 books before I was thrown out of the apartment. All these books, with which I really became close, with which I interacted daily - must be considered lost, unless a special Divine Providence watches over them - and me. I begin on the next page - from scratch, in memory of lost friends - the serial number 1500. Jan Marciniak". Cover abrasions, minor stains, overall good condition.
