[ZbigniewHERBERT ]. Handwritten letter from Zbigniew Herbert to Zdzislaw Najder, dated. 29 July 1971, (in Berlin?).
Letter on 3 pages form. A5, on Lufthansa on-board letter paper. Herbert addresses the addressee "Dear Old Man." He mentions a series of unpleasant experiences, "the most painful of which was the robbing of us in Berlin, which I interpret mythologically as the revenge of the Slavic gods. Some of the most important manuscripts I managed to recover - which is important and at the same time humiliating for me: are my old pants and pins of fake gold more valuable than poems conceived in the pure crystal of the spirit." Later in the letter, the poet writes about his literary plans, about revisions to the volume "Somos" that is in progress, about preparations for his return to the country ("we are diligently collecting salvaged property [...], making lists of books [...], making inventories, carrying packs. Strings, cardboard boxes, glue - the quiet delight of existence"). Underneath the letter, signed "Your Zbigniew" and annotated "+ Kasia". Very good condition.
Z. Herbert (1924-1998) - poet, essayist, playwright, author of radio plays, serious contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Knight of the Order of the White Eagle. Contrary to what we read in "Who's Who in Poland" (War. 1989), he was not a recipient of the International Lenin Prize.
