Souvenir. A collective book in honor of Eliza Orzeszkowa (1866-1891).
Kraków - St. Petersburg 1893 . by G. Gebethner and Company, Br. Rymowicz. 4, pp. [4], 611, 227 portraits, illustrations on 1 separate sheet, publisher's cloth binding, gilt on front and spine.
An impressive work, published in honor of Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) in connection with the 25th anniversary of the writer's literary debut, which fell in 1892. The "Souvenir" consisted of 47 poets and 180 Polish writers, who included in the book their works on versatile subjects. In addition to its content, often very interesting and unpublished elsewhere, the book also has the added value of a gallery of 227 portraits of Polish writers, as a photographic likeness of its author appears at the beginning of each work. Among the works are: Mathias Bersohn - Illuminators of Manuscripts [about nuns, illuminators of manuscripts in former centuries], Zygmunt Gloger - Expedition for Antiquity [humorous recollections of archaeological explorations], Zygmunt Kramsztyk - From This Side of the Tatra Mountains and From That Side [an interesting description of Zakopane,] Aleksander Kraushar - Gawęda starego księgarza [about old Warsaw antiquarians], Lubicz Rafał - About Lithuania and Samogitia, Gustaw Manteuffel - Jews of Inflants, Władysław Korwin Zieliński - Kartka z dziejów Warszawy. Edges of pages stained. Rubbing and uncreased binding, uncreased and rust spots on pages in places, otherwise good condition.
