Russian painter and printmaker, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Petrograd since 1921. In 1895 he began studying painting and I. Riepin in St. Petersburg. A year later he entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. From 1902 he exhibited at academic exhibitions and from 1920 at the Exhibitions of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. he painted for St. Petersburg magazines. In 1906, he taught in Penza at the local art school. In 1912, he took part in painting frescoes of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. He was a realist painter. He took up genre subjects with social criticism. He also painted lyrical portraits with depth of psychological analysis. He was one of the first artists to take up the subject of the October Revolution.
