Decorative cloth with 8 fragments of Slutsk belt [ kontusz belt ], Borderlands, Lviv 18th century

Souvenir from the collection of descendants after Klemens** and Tadeusz Rutowski*.

Material: silk, gilded metal threads [ gold threads ].

Back lined with protective fabric.

In the upper part of the collar for hanging.

Dimensions : 345 x 100 [cm].

State of preservation [ for conservative conservation] sufficient, losses and tears.

Unique with interesting provenance.
*Tadeusz Rutowski (1852-1918) He was the son of Klemens and Karolina née Treszkowska, came from a landed-intellectual family, and was educated successively at the Vienna Polytechnic and University. In 1872 he received a doctorate in philosophy. He was a journalist - writing numerous articles, he pointed out the need to industrialize the Prussian partition, and promoted grassroots work. In the National Sejm he represented the democratic center. During the Russian occupation (1914-1915) he was elected mayor of Lviv, replacing Joseph Neumann in the post.

Rutkowski's patronage activities are noteworthy. He was a collector of art, editor-in-chief of the monthly magazine "Art" and initiated the creation of the Municipal Picture Gallery. His activities had a positive impact on the development of cultural life in Lviv.

**Klemens Rutowski (born February 17, 1791 in Lithuania, died July 22, 1856 in Warsaw) - Polish government official, civil governor of Plock, secret counselor.
