Joseph Stalin [1878-1953] - was born in Georgia and joined the Bolshevik movement during the October Revolution in 1917. After the death of Vladimir Lenin in 1924, Stalin gained power as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). He gradually eliminated his political rivals and consolidated his power. As dictator, he introduced policies of industrialization and collectivization of agriculture in the Soviet Union, which aimed to transform the country from an agrarian state into a powerful industrial power. These reforms brought rapid industrial development, but also caused much suffering for the population, including famine and repression that led to the deaths of millions of people. In the 1930s and 1940s, Stalin pursued a policy of political purges and terror, known as the "Great Purge," which was characterized by mass arrests, show trials, and the incarceration of millions of people in forced labor camps. The repression affected both Communist Party members and ordinary citizens. After World War II, Stalin continued his authoritarian rule. He died in 1953
