Embroidery with gold and metal thread in old gold color on thin cotton fabric; 44 x 43 cm.
All trimmed with lace made with crochet.
Embroidery with the motif of the temple? Sephardic Jews used such napkins for religious rituals. They were often used in the synagogue as a covering for the cantor's pulpit-table reading the Torah.
Experts suggest that the napkin may also have been used to cover challah during Shabbat dinners. A similar object is in the collection of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw.
The owner's family traveled to Poland with Jacob Frank, which makes the dating of the object plausible.
