Lot description Show orginal version

A platter of a patriotic nature, made after 1872 to commemorate the unification of Germany (1871) and the golden mating of the royal couple of the Kingdom of Saxony - Johann Wettin and Amelia Wittelsbach (1872). The platter is made of bronze, with the counter of the outer orifice made of deeply embossed bronze sheet, decorated with images of thalers and rich decoration, filled with tin alloy for reinforcement. It is equipped with a massive sling, allowing it to be displayed on a wall with a suitable slope. The total outer diameter is a maximum of 45.8cm, the weight is about 5.3 kilograms.

In the central part of the platter (diameter 16.5cm) one can see an elaborately chiseled, tournament coat of arms shield with a place for an emblem, topped with a bar helmet facing slightly to the left and a rank crown of nobility, while the background of the coat of arms shield is made up of labrys - ostrich feathers. All planes not covered with ornamentation were silver-plated, while the engravings bear clear traces of gilding. The central part is surrounded by a 7cm wide collar with acanthus ornament. On the orifice of the platter, at 12 o'clock there is an image of the obverse, a beautiful double thaler of the Kingdom of Saxony, minted in 1872 to commemorate the golden mating of the royal couple - and at 6 o'clock an image of its reverse. Slightly less prominent places on the orifice of the platter are also occupied by individually displayed images of both sides of the occasional thalers of the Kingdom of Bavaria: Establishment of the Order of Theresa (1827) and Restoration of the Madonna Column in Munich (1855). The images of the remaining fifteen thalers, are grouped in six triplicates (three images of the thalers present both sides, the other twelve are shown only from one side). A detailed list of the numismatic coins presented on the platter can be found in the photograph attached to the auction. What must be emphasized is their faithfulness to the originals, right down to the preservation of identical diameters, mint marks and other fine details. The edge of the platter is richly decorated with artistic floral elements and mascarons, and traces of old gilding and silver plating are also visible here.

The themes of the occasional thalers (thalers commemorating the victory over France, the German Shooting Festivals, etc.) give the platter a patriotic character, while the period of their minting (1810-1872) and the placement of the image of the double thaler with King John Wettin and Queen Amelia in the place of honor, undoubtedly determine the time of the platter's creation to the 1870s and link it to the Kingdom of Saxony.

Disregarding the rubbing of the plated surfaces resulting from the one and a half century history of the object, its condition should be described as close to very good. On the outer (visible) side, relatively few shallow scratches can be seen, as well as a small dent between 2 o'clock and 3 o'clock. On the reverse side (not visible) there are traces of abrasions from exposure and slightly deeper scratches on the surface of the tin filling. The metal surfaces are covered, visible especially in the recesses, with an aged patina, which allows one to be sure of the original condition of the platter.
