Rafał Olbiński was born in 1943 in Kielce. In 1969, he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology, where he studied under the tutelage of Bohdan Pniewski and Jerzy Hryniewiecki, among others, defending his diploma in the studio of Jan Zachwatowicz and Franciszek Piasniak. In 1981 he emigrated to the United States, where he lived in New York for most of his career. From 1983 to 1988 he was a lecturer at Temple University in Philadelphia, and from 1987 to 2001 he taught at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York. The beginning of Olbinski's career was during the heyday of the Polish School of Poster Design. The artist used the experience gained in Poland in the United States, where he quickly gained recognition and popularity. He won a number of awards and prizes, including the 1994 Paris Prix Savignac - the international Oscar for the most significant poster of the year - and the award of London's Creative Review magazine for the best British illustration. In total, he has so far received more than 150 awards for his artistic achievements. Rafal Olbinski's surrealist work is full of metaphors and references to literature and art. His paintings and posters can take people away from the gray reality for a while and transport them to a magical world. In 2012 the artist was awarded the prestigious Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for exceptional artistic achievements. Rafal Olbinski also received the highest award in the field of art - the gold medal "Gloria Artis".
