Jacek Jan Tarnowski
On a pilgrimage towards nirvana, knowing that nirvana does not exist, 2023.
oil on canvas, 105 x 70 cm
Born in 1966 in Toruń, Poland. From the age of 10, he began working in the atelier of Toruń artists, later in Kraków. In 1985, he passed the exams for the Toruń Fine Arts only to get a passport so he could leave communism. Since 1986, he has lived and worked in France. He has been greatly influenced by the art of Beksinski, Malczewski, Witkacy, Starowiejski, Wyspianski and Kossak.
At the moment, Jan's favorite painters are Vermer, Klimt and Rothko. As he says, he is most influenced by architecture, especially deconstructivism headed by Frank Gehry. Thanks to his studies of architecture, he is free to compose his space, fill it first with the value of a drawing, then transfer it to the board and paint... The idea is to give positive emotions.
"These days, he doesn't want to add trouble to the viewers just to give a few pleasant seconds. Calm, silence but also rhythm, music and dance. Compared to my previous work, which was sad and full of troubles, now I try to give moments without troubles."
