The company was founded by François-Alphonse Debain, who registered his mark - two men in a boat - in 1847. His son and heir Alphonse Edouard formed a partnership with Louis-Frederic Flamant as Debain & Flamant, took over his father's mark, adding his partner's name to it. The partnership existed until 1880. Debain was succeeded by Flamant, who kept the existing mark while adding the new company name Flamant & Fils.
