The company was founded by Carl Stumpf in 1804; after his death in 1832, the workshop was initially run independently by his widow, then from 1834 together with his stepson Carl Moritz. In 1838 Carl Moritz became the sole owner of the business. In 1861 his son joined the business and under the name Moritz Stumpf & Sohn the company operated until 1884. Moritz died in 1894. The business remained in the hands of the family until 1945.
