He was one of the most eminent painters of the 19th century. His first teacher was his father. He began his studies at the Drawing Class in Warsaw (1867-1871) and at W. Gerson's private studio. From 1871 to 1874 he studied at the Munich academy under A. Strähuber and H. Anschütz. In Munich he became associated with the Polish artistic colony centered around J. Brandt and M. Gierymski. He painted genre scenes, rushing horse-drawn carriages, landscapes. The originality and exoticism of his paintings ensured his success and numerous commissions, but unfortunately this lowered the artistic level of his works. However, after his return to the country and his renewed exposure to nature influenced the revival of his work. This period includes atmospheric, lyrical landscapes, sometimes enlivened by the motif of wild birds, and scenes emphasizing the relationship between man and nature.
