Biography
In 1892-94 he studied at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under Florian Cynk, Izydor Jablonski and Władysław Luszczkiewicz, among others. He then continued his studies at the Drawing and Painting School of Stanisław Grocholski in Munich, where he lived until 1901, the same year he married Jadwiga Young de Lenie. After returning to Poland, he settled permanently in Krakow, which became one of the leading subjects in his landscapes. He regularly traveled to southern Europe, especially to Italy. These trips resulted in numerous Mediterranean landscapes, such as those of Capri, as well as vedutas of Italian cities, Venice and Verona. After World War I and Poland regained access to the sea, one of his favorite plein-airs became the Baltic coast, and with it views of seaside beaches, dunes and stills from Hel, Gdynia or Gdansk. In the field of marine painting, the artist's atmospheric nocturnes attract a lot of attention. Malachowski painted not only spaces associated with water. His oeuvre also includes Tatra landscapes and scenes of Polish countryside life. He expressed himself in oil technique, but it was watercolors and gouaches that dominated his artistic activity.
