Rudolf ENDERLEIN
1908 Dresden - 1985 Budziszyn
German animalist sculptor. He began sculpting animal figures from an early age. The oldest date back to around 1917. In 1925 he began training as a woodcarver in Budziszyn. From 1930 to 1931 he took lessons at the Bad Warmbrunn (Ćieplice) woodcarving school with Professor Cirillo Dell'Antonio. From 1932 he stayed in Switzerland, and from 1933 he attended the Basel School of Applied Arts for four semesters. There he was a student of Otto Meier. Study trips took him to Paris, England, Holland, Belgium and Italy. In 1935, he returned to Germany and has since worked as an independent sculptor in Bautzen. From 1946 he took part in repairing war damage, including restoring the stucco ceiling of the audience hall in Ortenburg and the statue of Matthias Corvinus on the tower. He also made exterior stucco decorations on the facades of houses in the Old Town. Rudolf Enderlein made sculptures of stone, bronze, plaster casting, wood and clay. Many of his works can be found in urban spaces in Bautzen, Zgorzelec, Hoyerswerda and Berlin.
