White and gray marble; height 60 cm; width 15 cm; depth 15 cm.
Italy, Florence, early 20th century.
Figure of a young, barefoot girl, standing in a slight contrapposto, with her head turned to the left. Her hair is hidden under a cap-forming shawl; her dress is heavily draped, tied at the waist. With her right arm, the girl supports a sheaf of grain; in her hand she conceals a chick. The palm of the left hand, bent at the elbow - raised in a gesture protecting the found bird. Square base with concave corners. Signed "Pugi".
Guglielmo Pugi ran a sculpture studio in Florence with his sons Gino and Florenzo. After his death, the studio became known as "Fratelli G. & F. Pugi."
