René Charles de SAINT- MARCEAUX
1845 Reims -1915 Paris
French sculptor. In 1863 he took up studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with François Jouffroy. He mainly created portrait busts and images of animals. He had been exhibiting in the Paris Salon since 1868, when, having opted out of the Prix de Rome competition, he decided to spend time in Florence instead. He was in Italy a second time in 1873-74, and his marble "Spirit Guarding the Secret of the Tomb shows a clear influence of Michelangelo. Among his works were several statues created for Baron Rothschild for his Château de Ferrières and a tomb in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris for Alexander Dumas' son. In 1891, he joined the newly formed Société des artistes français. In 1909, he created a bronze and granite monument for the headquarters of the World Postal Union in Bern
