Prince Paul Troubetzkoy, [also known as Paolo / Pavel Petrovich Troubetzkoy, Russian: Павел Петрович Трубецкой] was born on February 15, 1866 in Intra on Lake Maggiore in Italy, near the Swiss border. He studied under Ernesto Bazzaro in Milan. He spent his professional life in the cosmopolitan centers of Moscow, Paris and New York, where he worked with fascinating people, including poets, artists and acquaintances who became not only his friends, but also models for his work. He created his own style, without a trace of the symbolism that dominated the 19th century. An exhibition of his work in New York in 1911 led to a series of other exhibitions in major American cities, which established his reputation in the United States. From 1921, he divided his time between his studio in Neuilly in western Paris and his villa on Lake Maggiore, where he died in 1938. G.B. Shaw described him as "the most astonishing sculptor of modern times."
