Biography
The artist graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He is the author of theatrical stage designs, director of documentary films and art installations. In the gray and depressing time of the pandemic, the artist began to create unique colorful lamps, about which he said the following: "I don't know how to do art if it's not related to emotions. I also have an emotional relationship to lamps. My lamps look like good spirits or distant planets, they have something anthropomorphic about them and like to live among people. Their light is also alive during the day, and at night the color of the light changes, the yellowing becomes whiter and the colors sharper. When working on them, I think of Rothko and the abstract painting of colorful planes. The white lampshades are like a canvas that is filled with color. Colored light is therapeutic, it improves the mood, gives peace of mind" (https://www.designalive.pl/ michal-korchowiec-my-lamps-likes-living-in-humans/ accessed 17.11.2022). The artist himself designs and constructs multi-element light sculptures. In creating them, he selects valuable and antique glass lampshades dating from 1920-1980, which he then combines into stable and closed forms. The selected pieces are not perfect, they may be damaged by age and history, but the visible blemishes only add to their uniqueness. Thanks to the cracks, curves and deformations, the beauty of the lamps is unique and individual, and each sculpture is one of a kind. Initially, Korchowiec began creating lamps solely for himself, to bring some colorful light into the gray and dreary reality of pandemic lockdown. For the artist, the uniqueness of the colors of light coming out from behind the glass shades is as important as the shape of the objects. It is also worth mentioning that the beauty and uniqueness of Michal Korchowiec's designs were recognized at the Łódź Design Festival in the "Must have 2022" poll.
