Antoni Kenar was born in 1906, died in 1959. Between 1921 and 1925 he studied at the School of Wood Industry in Zakopane. He then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Karol Stryjeński and Tadeusz Breyer. His professional career was closely linked to the Zakopane School of Wood Industry. In 1938 he took a position there as a teacher of sculpture, in 1947 he became head of the department, and after the establishment was transformed into the State High School of Plastic Arts and Technology, he held the position of director until his death. He modernized the education system by skillfully combining the tendencies of modern art with respect for the Podhale tradition. The school still exists and now bears the name of its founder. The works of this sculptor bear both signs of inspiration from folk art and his contemporary tendencies in art: cubist treatment of the solid and decorativeness derived from art déco.
