Juan Cook was born in 1948 in Rancagua, Chile, of an English diplomat father and an Indian mother, and studied at the School of Fine Arts in Chile. There he met revolutionaries. He became an underground activist himself, and was imprisoned by Salvador Allende's government in 1971. Two years later he escaped during General Pinochet's coup.
