Artwork description:
Jerzy Nowosielski is known for his unique style, which consisted of traditional iconographic themes and motifs and a thoroughly contemporary artistic form. The artist is sometimes referred to as one of the most unique artists in Polish art history.
The featured portrait, taken in profile, was executed in Jerzy Nowosielski's characteristic manner, using a thin, sharp line of ink. The painter has portrayed a hieratic figure, most likely a woman, in his characteristic simplified and precise manner, as indicated by only slightly marked long hair framing the face. The offered work surprises with its finesse in shaping the figure and at the same time shows the role of drawing in artistic creation. The presented object is part of a series of similar works by Jerzy Nowosielski drawn in ink and showing ascetic anonymous portraits in profile.
