Lot description Show orginal version
Polish nobleman.

Etching, signed on the plate: "JG. v. vliet fec." "R inventor." (17th c.) Plate imprint: 22.5 x 19 cm (in frame behind glass: 30.5 x 25.5 cm).
The presented print depicts a bust of a nobleman in distinctive Polish attire including headdress - a cap with feathers. Rembrandt as well as Stefano della Bella were fascinated by 17th-century Polish Sarmatian costumes. Rembrandt even painted his own self-portrait as a Polish nobleman; his pupil van Vliet made a print of a Polish nobleman after Rembrandt - offered here. Jan Gillisz van Vliet (1605 - 1668), was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age and a pupil of Rembrandt. Today he is known only for his drawings and prints. Minor browning. Good condition.
