Biography
Graphic artist, critic, art theorist and writer. Studied at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw: graphic design under Wladyslaw Skoczylas, painting under Tadeusz Pruszkowski, book graphics under Ludwik Gardowski. Member of many art groups and associations, including: Association of Graphic Artists "Ryt", Association of Polish Graphic Artists, "Block of Professional Artists" of Plastic Artists, Group of Graphic Artists "Black and White". He was an extremely prolific artist , often exhibited at home and abroad, and won numerous awards. At first he practiced various graphic techniques, later, almost exclusively woodcut (about 200 works). He published his own theory of this art discipline: woodcut in a book, portfolio and on the wall - remarks on the graphic race of woodcut, published in Warsaw, 1936. He mainly created architectural and symbolic compositions. His favorite motif was Warsaw's Old Town. In the last period of his work, he also makes portraits. He is the author of many woodcut series and portfolios, such as: Old Town - a portfolio of Warsaw woodcuts (1923), Fiorenza - 12 woodcuts (1928), Book of the City - a series of linocuts (1932). He also develops illustrations and layouts for books, such as: Pieśń o Rynku i zaułkach Or - Ota (Artur Oppman), Na drogach Polski by Hanna Mortkowiczówna, Szary brat by Pia Górska. An important area of Cieślewski's work is exlibrises. He is also the author of treatises on history, art theory and art criticism. He was also involved in literary works.
