Published in 1613, "Hortus Eystettensis" is the most scientifically comprehensive and artistically magnificent publication on botany to date. Johann Konrad von Gemmingen (1561-1612), prince-bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria, commissioned the caretaker of his garden, Basilius Besler (1561-1629), to compile an atlas of the plants grown there. Besler was an apothecary and botanist. He involved many excellent artists in this publishing venture. The work took more than a dozen years. Luxurious pieces with hand-colored illustrations were also made.
