According to legend, Faust was an educated man who turned away from God and made a deal with the devil, giving him his soul for knowledge. In the engraving, we observe the moment when the magic disk appears in Faust's study, levitating against the background of a large window. The object illuminates Faust's face with rays, showing the masterful play of light and shadow in the engraving. Rembrandt used intricate lines here to add depth and perspective to this work, directing our gaze to the very center of events, where some metaphysical scene is taking place.
Rembrandt van Rijn, a Dutch painter, draughtsman and printmaker, is considered one of the greatest artists in the history of art. He mastered the chiaroscuro technique to perfection, using it to deepen the drama and mood of his compositions. He is also called the "painter of the soul." Inspired by biblical and mythological motifs, he also created genre scenes, landscapes and numerous portraits and self-portraits.
