Peter Klasen (born August 18, 1935 in Lübeck] - painter, printmaker, photographer and sculptor - creating and living in France. He began learning the techniques of lithography and airbrushing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1955. This avant-garde academy trained in the spirit of Bauhaus and German Expressionism.
In 1959 Klasen arrived in Paris, and in 1960 he moved to a studio in the Rue de Clignancourt. During this time, he became involved in the creation of the so-called La figuration narrative, a direction in art considered a variant of the new figuration. The works of artists working within this direction are distinguished by their engaged, narrative character; they show a weariness with abstraction and pop art, although formally they often draw from them.
Initially, Klasen paints mainly with acrylics and uses an airbrush; he creates collages from objects, photographs and documents. Klasen's inspiration, like other artists in the narrative figuration circle, comes from photographs from daily newspapers, magazines or movie posters. With his art, Klasen comments on the reality in which humans coexist with highly developed technologies.
