We present to you an incograph depicting Cracow from 1638.
Matthäus Merian was an engraver and publisher in Frankfurt am Main from 1627, then the company in the hands of his heirs operated until the 1830s. The first edition of Neuwe archontologia cosmica in 1638 contained more than 90 copperplate engravings with maps and city views.
Original: colored copperplate/paper, 20 x 38.5 cm (print), At the bottom below the view, in a frame, a legend in Latin explaining 45 objects.
The view was published in Johann Ludwig Gottfried's work: "Neuwe archentologia cosmica, das ist Beschreibung aller Kayserthumben...", published in Frankfurt am Main in 1638 (later editions: 1649, 1695), and then "reworked" into a French version - a legend in Latin and French was added, and the color scheme was changed slightly.
Inkography 535 x 395 mm (print)
Incography (modern copy) has occupied an important place in the vast pantheon of contemporary printmaking for more than a decade, still remaining an innovative and attractive investment. In addition to its investment, interior and aesthetic qualities, the collector's dimension of inkography is a new opening in the design space and the art market.
So why the print? Inkography makes it possible to purchase originally signed prints by the most outstanding Polish artists at attractive prices. Recently, we have seen an increase in interest in prints at auctions and in galleries. Inkography is becoming an increasingly frequent choice of investors and designers.
