"Marian Kratochwil came from the former Eastern Borderlands. He was born in Hutsul Kosovo in 1906 in the family of a judge. In 1926, his first and only teacher, mainly drawing, was the well-known painter Stanislav Batovsky. In a short time Marian reached such a high level that, according to Batowski, he no longer needed to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. From then on he was self-taught. Initially, he directed all his attention to perfecting his pencil and pen drawing. The result of this activity was a number of albums. In them he showed not only the landscape, but also folklore with a special focus on peasants, Jews, urban and small-town plebs."
