Leonor Fini (1907-1996) was an Argentine-Italian-French painter, printmaker, set and costume designer, best known for her surrealist art that often explored themes of femininity, eroticism and mythology. She was born in Buenos Aires, but spent most of her life in Europe, mainly in France. She was self-taught and became part of the Parisian art world, where she made connections with the likes of Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. Fini excelled in the surrealist movement, creating paintings in which strong, mysterious women often dominated the narrative, reflecting her fascination with female power and independence.
Leonor Fini was also an accomplished set and costume designer, and one of her significant contributions to the field of theater was her work with the Spanish ballet Antonio Sonatino. She designed costumes and sets for his productions, combining her unique surrealist approach to art with Spanish dance. Her stage works, like her paintings, were theatrical and emotional, often emphasizing dramatic movement and color.
