Edward Raczynski (1786-1845) - social activist, writer, collector, founder of the Raczynski library. In 1806 he joined the Polish army and belonged to Napoleon's honor guard. He fought in Pomerania and Prussia. In 1809 he took part in the battles of Raszyn and Sandomierz. Awarded the Virtuti Militari Cross in 1810, he left the army with the rank of captain and settled in Rogalin. In 1811 he became a deputy to the Sejm from the Poznań district. In 1814 he traveled to Turkey and Greece, the culmination of which was Diary of a Trip to Turkey , published in 1821. Along the way he visited estates and magnate residences in Ukraine: Humań with the Zofiówka park of the Potocki family and Krzewin of the Jablonowski family, as well as the abandoned castles in Lutsk and Ostrog. The sketches drawn up by Ludwik Fuhrmann, who accompanied him, became the basis for the watercolors below, and these in turn became the basis for the engravings that appeared in the Journal. These were the beginnings of his publishing activities, which developed intensively since he became a member of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science in 1827. He published historical sources and works, political treatises, memoirs and translations from ancient literature. Particularly appreciated works include Gabinet of Polish Medals and Memoirs of Greater Poland . Source: Wielkopolska Biographical Dictionary.
