Rev. Benvenuto Mankowski, born 13 II 1816 in the village of Bialkowa near Kalisz into a peasant family. After graduating from a parish school, he entered the Bernardine Fathers' monastery in Kole, where he continued his education. He quickly became famous as a preacher, preaching in the churches of this congregation in Kole, Kalisz and the surrounding area. In 1848 he moved to St. Anne's Monastery in Warsaw. His sermons in the capital continued to gather crowds and spread in manuscript copies. A friend of the circle of Enthusiasts, he became associated with the so-called Organization, a conspiracy formed in 1847 and led by H. Krajewski. Arrested in 1850 and imprisoned in the 10th Pavilion. In accordance with the proposal of the Investigating Committee of July 24, 1851, approved by the Governor of the Kingdom of Poland on May 18, 1852, sentenced to exile, which he spent in the Vologda gubernia. After returning to Poland in 1855 he was a lector at the Bernardine monastery in Przyrów near Częstochowa. He took part in patriotic manifestations in 1861. Participant in the January Uprising; he was a chaplain in the insurgent unit of Theodor Cieszkowski. Died in the battle of £azy on 22 March 1863, buried in the cemetery in Przyrów. [PSB]
