This caricature shows an Englishman's executioner standing under a cross that has an end in the style of the crossed-out cross that is the British Union Jack from the flag of Great Britain. With his legs he leans against a female figure removed from the cross, presumably a symbol of a Europe tormented by the 1st war. Author's comments for the publisher and his autograph in the margins. Good condition.
J.Diez a well-known painter and printmaker. He studied at the Academy of Munich, and was later a professor there. At the beginning of the 20th century he was president of the Munich Secession association. He specialized in political caricatures and poster designs. At the Great Exhibition of German Art in 1939, his painting was bought by Adolf Hitler.
