DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
In his works, Jozef Brandt often depicted historical figures of the Lisowczycy, who were a 17th-century Polish formation of armed light cavalry. They were known for their efficiency on the battlefield, bravado and adventurous nature.
The work on display is a head study of the recognizable figure of the foxhunter, whose twisted mustache, fur cap and arquebuscle slung across his back aptly convey the character's intransigence, as well as perfectly reflecting elements of the Sarmatian fashion of the time.
