Girl with a Pearl - a painting considered one of the most outstanding examples of 17th century
painting. It is now in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague; it is often referred to as the Mona Lisa
North or the Dutch Mona Lisa.
The painting was the inspiration for a historical novel (1999) of the same name
by Tracy Chevalier. In 2003, British director Peter Webber made a film titled
The Girl with the Pearl, which is a creative vision of the circumstances of the painting. The role of the title
Girl with a Pearl is played by Scarlett Johansson.
