He is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and received his diploma in the studio of Professor Stefan Gierowski.He was one of the founders of the art group representing the current of new expression "Gruppa", and is currently a teacher at his Alma Mater.
Modzelewski in the early period of his work created abstract paintings, sometimes using stencils. In 1986-1989, he created realistic figural paintings characterized by a mood of surrealism. In the 1990s, Modzelewski's paintings were characterized by schematic depictions of human figures.
