The Field of Mars was designated for these exercises in 1751, when Louis XV established a military school for people from the poor nobility. Various revolutionary events were held there, as well as balloon flight trials, among others. It was here that the capture of the Bastille was celebrated (July 14, 1789). For a while, the Champs de Mars hosted world exhibitions, the main attraction of which was the Eiffel Tower. Eventually, a large part of the site was sold and a garden was created.
