Biography
In 1999 he graduated from the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His primary medium is photography: he creates photo-conceptual works, digitally manipulates images, constructs three-dimensional objects from photographs. He has collaborated on many photographic projects with Aneta Grzeszczykowska, with whom he also forms a duo in private life. Smaga is interested in the possibility of seeing the invisible through the photographic image and the illusory nature of photography. The artist is also involved in documenting exhibitions. In 2005, the Grzeczykowska-Smaga duo was nominated for the "Views" prize awarded by Deutsche Bank, and in 2006 - for the "Polityka" Passports. The duo has had numerous solo exhibitions: including at the Raster Gallery, the Polish Institute in Düsseldorf and the Kunsthaus Graz in Austria. In addition, Smaga and Grzeszczykowski have shown their works in group exhibitions at, among others, Warsaw's Zachęta Gallery, the Miami Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Karlsruhe and the New Museum in New York.
