Andō Hiroshige (b. 1797 in Edo, d. October 12, 1858), also known as Hiroshige Utagawa. One of Japan's best-known painters, printmakers and ukiyo-e artists. He took the nickname Hiroshige in 1811, when he began studying in the studio of Toyohiro Utagawa. Because of this, he was able to use the name of the Utagawa school instead of his own name.Hiroshige did most of his work in woodcut technique. He became famous for his landscapes and nature paintings. Among the most famous, for example, are his series on Tokaido. His work inspired Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and other Impressionist artists. Many of his works are exhibited at the "Manggha" museum in Cracow. A collector of his woodcuts was, among others, Felix Jasienski, and an admirer of Hiroshige's work was Wislawa Szymborska, who dedicated a poem to him from her volume "People on the Bridge."
