Matisse painted this painting also called "The Red Room" commissioned by a Russian collector and is currently in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Matisse's work undoubtedly ranks among the masterpieces of the era. Matisse's painting, although innovative and maintained in the style of Fauvism, has many references to other works and styles of art. Both its form, artistic solutions and broad artistic references testify to the artist's enormous creative erudition. The achievement Matisse made in "The Red Room" places him among some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Along with Picasso, he is one of those artists who opened the hidden door to modern art and charted its hitherto unknown directions.
