The drawing bears in the bottom centre an old pen inscription: "ANANAS ACULETATUS FRUCTU PYRAMIDATO, CARNE AUREA PLUM."'; on the verso it bears the same pen inscription in cursive.

The drawing probably represents the preparatory study for the illustration in the volume by Johann David Heinrich Schöpf, Travels in the Confederation.
