The heliogravure comes from a richly illustrated monograph by Felicien Rops (1833-1898), Belgianprintmaker, representative of Symbolism.
Belgian printmaker, representative of Symbolism. From 1853 he was educated at the University of Brussels. In 1874 he moved to Paris. He created illustrations for the works of writers such as Théophile Gautier, Alfred de Musset, Stéphane Mallarmé, Jules Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly, Joséphin Péladan, Octave Uzanne. In 1866, he designed the frontispiece to Baudelaire's Les Épaves. He used techniques including etching and aquatint, which he popularized. Félicien Rops was among the founding members of the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, established in 1868. He was also a member of the freemasonry lodge Grand Orient of Belgium.
